When it rains, it pours, especially in Vancouver I guess. A brief stroll along West 4th this afternoon adds the following to the list:
- Hope Unlimited (2206 West 4th @ Yew) has gone out of business. This despite an abundance of reviews on travel sites. Oh wait. They are all the same…
- Immersion Clothing, one of a number of consignment stores on the lower stretch of 4th (1926 West 4th @ Cypress), is moving to a new Broadway & Macdonald location. They currently have a clearance sale.
- The Helly Hansen store (2025 West 4th @ Maple) has been gutted and most of the sign is gone as well. It is unclear whether they are simply undergoing some renovations or whether they have actually moved out.
It looks like there will be plenty of new openings to look forward to in the new year.

Strange. Hope Unlimited was closed on Boxing Day. I guess that makes sense now.
When I walked by earlier today I realized they might actually be doing renovations rather than having gone out of business. Time will tell I guess.
I’ve heard from a Book Warehouse employee that they will be moving into the Helly Hanson location.
Hmm, interesting. And that just after they moved from West 4th (from the old Reitmans location) to 3066 West Broadway?
Confirmed. There is a “Wouldn’t it be nice if a Book Warehouse moved in here? sign on the window.
What I heard from the shop keepers a couple of months ago is that the Helly Hansen store will open on Granville Street in the near future and I can’t seem to remember what was due to come into their space. I truly miss Book Warehouse as it was the first shop on our way up West 4th and the Broadway location is so cramped, hardly works for the layout of all the books they had on offer! I can’t imagine Book Warehouse moving into the Helly Hansen spot as it’s quite small. Would rather the books than another nail salon though!
Also sad to see Hope leave. After Reitman’s and soon Le Chateau to arrive, I do wish for a non-chain store to come in the space!
I keep hoping to see a closing sign on the Reitman’s store. It doesn’t belong on 4th Ave and the sterile Kmart lighting is a blight on 4th Ave.
