What’s New at Kits Neighbourhood House: Gardening, Potlucks, Labyrinths, Oh My!

1757

In addition to our regular programming, Kitsilano Neighbourhood House has some great new events and opportunities coming up in the next few weeks. Got a question or a comment? We’re here for you at 2325 West 7th Ave (at Vine Street), 604-736-3588, and megan@kitshouse.org.

Green Your Thumb! Weekly Community Gardening Sessions

Every THURSDAY from 1-5 come join community organizations and volunteers that are passionate about creating community through gardening! Volunteering could include: prepping & turning beds, planting, garden maintenance, education, community collaboration… and any other ideas you might have! Please let us know if you’re planning on attending by calling 604-732-3588 or sending an email to megan@kitshouse.org. Snacks provided!

Should Kits House get a LABYRINTH?

We have the opportunity to paint a Labyrinth on the floor of our Hall, on the corner of 7th and Vine. We want to know what you think about this! But first… WHAT’S A LABYRINTH? A Labyrinth offers a pathway for walking meditation. Following its patterned lines, the walker reaches a calm and contemplative state. Many spiritual groups have traditionally used Labyrinths, and today they are found in public spaces throughout the world.

The idea and implementation of a Labyrinth at Kits House is volunteer-driven. If it is painted, we will hold Labyrinth Meditation sessions once a month, open to the entire community and featuring live music by local artists, on a by-donation basis.

We want your feedback on this important question. Please raise your voice, either YAY or NAY! Email megan@kitshouse.org, or call 604-736-3588.

Seniors and Elders Guide to the Westside: Copies still available!

You heard about it on CBC Radio Two, you read about it in the Vancouver Courier. Now you can get your hands on your own copy of this original, locally-produced resource guide! Developed in consultation with seniors from all over the Westside, it pools local knowledge on all of the people, places, and services that are important to seniors. It’s available at Kitsilano Neighbourhood House for only $4, or online at kitshouse.org for free. Stop in to pick one up for yourself, or as a gift for a friend or parent.

Community Potluck – June 3, 2009 – LGBTQ History and Culture

What do the words ‘identity’, ‘community’ & ‘culture’ mean to you?

Join Peter Toppings, Education Outreach Services Program Manager at The Centre, for an interactive presentation on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) history and culture. Learn about the significance of community symbols such as the pink triangle and rainbow flag, and events like Pride Day and the International Day Against Homophobia! Meet familiar faces and new neighbours, and bring a vegetarian dish to share! Wednesday June 3, 6-8 pm. 2325 West 7th Avenue.

We are also looking for volunteers to help run this event! Please contact Emily or Megan at 604-736-3588 for more information.

And as always, you can read more about our programs and volunteer opportunities at www.kitshouse.org.
