A Kitsilano man is fighting for his life in a Vancouver hospital after being pulled from his smoke-filled Maple Street apartment Sunday morning.

About 30 firefighters and seven fire trucks responded to a blaze in a ground-floor suite in the 1800-block Maple Street shortly after 10:00am, Vancouver Fire Service Battalion Chief Terry Nikolai told The Province.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, was found semi-conscious in the unit’s bathroom by firefighters.

“We managed to get him out, but he was unconscious and had third-degree burns to his arms and a portion of his torso,” Nikolai said.

The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and remained in intensive care. The suite sustained extensive fire damage, Nikolai said, though others in the building had only minor smoke damage. The cause of the fire wasn’t known.
