While the entire city celebrates Car-Free Day on Sunday, June 16, Kitsilano does things differently. Main Street, Commercial Drive and the West End will close down their thoroughfares to traffic and have live music, food carts, street hockey, street chalk art, kids’ zones and more on Sunday. In Kitsilano, we’ve got a handful of Kitsilano Car-Free Day block parties on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 where ever Kitsilano residents have found the spirit to host them.

What are the perks of a block party? It’s a great way to get to know your immediate neighbours. Plus, West 4th Avenue has already been shut down quite a bit thanks to construction, so we avoid doing it once more. For those of us who do not have a neighbour throwing a block party, or simply didn’t think of hosting our own early enough to plan one, we miss out. And Car-Free Days are intended to build healthy communities by getting people out of cars and interacting on the neighbourhood streets.

Here’s a Google Map of the block parties taking place in Kitsilano over June 15 and June 16. If you do attend one, it’s good form to bring blankets, chairs, beverages and snacks to share.

Happy community building, folks.

Do you wish Kitsilano had a unified Car-Free Day street festival like Vancouver’s other neighbourhoods? Or do you prefer scattered block parties? Weigh in below.
