Barbecue and picnic season has come to an end. We’ve run out of excuses to buy hotdogs. So what’s on the menu for fall? Here are three Kitsilano restaurants serving tempting, seasonal comfort food.
1) Kitsilano Daily Kitchen, 1809 West 1st, 604-569-2741, Kitsdaily.com
As the name suggests, Kits Daily Kitchen changes their menu daily based on the local ingredients Chef Fowke has on hand. Although the food qualifies as fine dining, the atmosphere is laid back–a hallmark of Pacific Northwest cuisine. Early fall is mushroom foraging season. So we’re keen to sink our teeth into their Cache Creek flank steak with sour cream mashed potatoes, braised chard and the holy grail of mushroom foraging: chanterelles.
2) La Quercia, 3689 West 4th, 604-676-1007, Laquercia.ca
Consistently ranked one of Vancouver’s top restaurants, the alla famiglia menu is full of rich fall flavour. La Quercia’s fresh sheet changes daily based on the (mostly) locally-sourced ingredients the chef has on hand. Think lamb shoulder with roast cauliflower and porcini mushrooms and tender housemade gnocchi. With a choice of five or seven courses, you’ll probably get to try both.
3) Burgoo, 2272 West 4th Avenue, 604-734-4378, Burgoo.ca
This local chain specializes in hearty, stick-to-your ribs comfort food all year round. We find ourselves more likely to visit in fall and winter. Your options range from tomato soup and jambalaya to bacon mac and cheese and authentic beef bourguinon.
