Nothing says happy Mother’s Day like putting your feet up and having a celebratory toast. Toast raising considerate people. Toast hard work. Toast landmarks. Toast the small stuff. Toast the fact that someone else is responsible for them at this exact moment and you can have another. Another drink, not baby.
3 Drinks for Mama
1. Brassneck Passive Aggressive pale ale
Vancouver is having a craft beer moment and that makes mama happy. Mamas in the know are into session ales, not novelty statement beers. One of our favourite growler fills these days is the Passive Aggressive pale ale at Brassneck. Dry hopped with an orange-papaya aroma, floral notes and a clear piney finish this beer hits the spot. Have we mentioned we’re soooooo grateful that we get one day off a year?
2. Classic champagne cocktail
Juice is for cleansing, not boozing. Instead, try the champagne cocktail–the little black dress of cocktails with bubbly. Put three drops of bitters onto sugar cube; let soak in. Place sugar cube in a champagne flute. Add a splash of cognac, and top with champagne. The quality of the champagne matters for this one, so tell your old man to go big at Kitsilano Wine Cellar or don’t go home.
3. Margarita
We really like saying “mama needs a martini,” but in truth, mama needs a margarita. Festive and potent, they just hit the spot. We’re into this Epicurious recipe with Reposado tequila, aged in oak which gives the drink a smooth smokiness. It also trades the traditional sugar syrup for superfine sugar, which gives the drink a slightly grainy texture.
