Ah, it’s Valentine’s Day this Sunday, February 14th. Don’t have any plans made yet? We’ve got three date ideas in Kitsilano for you. And hey, they can all be enjoyed solo, too.
1. Car Dining
For those looking for a fun and easy take-out dinner, the White Spot location on West Broadway and Larch Street offers an old-school drive-in with carhop service. Just park at the back in the dedicated spots, pick your favourite burger and sides (or ribs, fish & chips, pasta, salads, etc.) from the large menu on the wall, and a server will come out to place your order and deliver it to you. No need to get out of the car, even to eat! Our picks: For $15 you get the Legendary Combo (burger, coleslaw, fries) with a hand-scooped Strawberry Milkshake. Open daily from 6:30am-11pm.
2. Star Gazing
On a clear evening, head to the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory next to the Space Centre in Vanier Park. Inside the cozy 1970s observatory, a knowledgeable staff astronomer will assist you with operating the computer-controlled 1/2 metre Cassegrain telescope so that you and your date can explore the night skies above our fair city and beyond. Open on Saturdays only, from 8pm-12am. Admission is by donation. Afterwards, you can enjoy a stroll along Kits Beach.
3. Beach Jazz
There’s a new place to eat on the Yew Street strip near the beach. It’s called the Blue Martini Jazz Cafe. The menu features fine dining Italian fusion fare but we recommend coming here for the great live music starting after 7pm nightly. Enjoy jazz, blues, and soul music in a classy cool kind of atmosphere along with a nice glass of bubbly. Musicians playing this weekend will include Don Stewart and also the Guenter Schultz Trio (Guenter is from KMFDM fame, for you 1980s music folks out there).
