It may not surprise you that Vancouver recently ranked fifth best city among 230 cities globally for quality of life. The list is annually compiled by consultancy firm Mercer, and is used to help global companies compensate expat workers fairly based on location.

Vancouver is the only city in North America to make the top 10, Vienna, Zurich, Auckland, and Munich coming in ahead. Other North American cities to make the top 100 include Toronto (15) and Ottawa (17). In the United States, San Francisco (28) ranks highest for quality of living, followed by Boston (34), Honolulu (35), Chicago (43), and New York City (44).

Mercer ranks quality of living based on internal stability, crime levels, performance of local law enforcement, and the home country’s relationship with other countries.

Here are the top 10 cities globally:

  1. Vienna, Austria
  2. Zurich, Switzerland
  3. Auckland, New Zealand
  4. Munich, Germany
  5. Vancouver, Canada
  6. Dusseldorf, Germany
  7. Frankfurt, Germany
  8. Geneva, Switzerland
  9. Copenhagen, Denmark
  10. Sydney, Australia
