As we bid farewell to the year that was 2016, it’s time we turn our attention to the year ahead: 2017.

The new year is a time for rejuvenation—for a rebirth of sorts—not just for the calendar. It’s a time when promises are made with good intentions, and no matter the result, at least we can say we tried.

We all know what it feels like to give to others, right? Heck, we’re coming off the season where giving is front and center, so we should know.

This year, have that feeling all year round by keeping some donation totes handy around the home. Old toys, old clothes, canned goods, it could be anything you don’t want anymore that someone might need…toss it in the donation bin and when it’s full, drop it off at your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or wherever else accepts items for those in need. It’ll cut back on your clutter, and put a smile on the face of someone less fortunate.

Here are just a few of the local charities in the neighbourhood who make it easy to donate your lightly used goods to a worthy cause. That way, you make a difference in your community and have an added incentive to declutter and get ready for 2017.

BC SPCA Thrift Store | 3626 West Broadway, 604-736-4136, www.spca.bc.ca

The following is a list of the items (listed in order of preference) welcomed by BC SPCA Thrift Stores: Housewares, china/flatware, furniture (tables, chairs, sofas, beds, shelving, desks, lamps), rugs, curtains, appliances, electronic equipment, clothing, games, and books.

Not all stores take donations of larger items (such as furniture or appliances). Call the store near you to inquire about arrangements for pick-up of large items.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store | 2714 West Broadway & 1906 West 4th Avenue, www.thriftstore.ca

The Salvation Army is looking for your used clothing and household goods for their thrift stores. You can donate directly to one of the two locations in Kitsilano or use the website to locate a drop bin near you.

Vancouver Public Library | Kitsilano Branch, 2425 MacDonald Street, 604-665-3976, www.vpl.ca

The Vancouver Public Library welcomes gifts like books, DVDs, CDs and magazines. They should be in good condition and of current interest. Donations can be dropped off at any VPL branch during regular hours, or brought to the Central branch shipping dock. Materials should be marked as gifts for the library.

Big Brothers | Book a pick up,  www.bigbrothersvancouver.com
