Vancouver police closed the entrance of Granville Island to cars for most of the day Saturday after a sinkhole appeared underneath the Granville Street Bridge.
City officials said a pipe under the road burst and the waste it was carrying to a nearby pump station began bubbling to the surface.
For much of the day, vehicle access into Granville Island was closed, but by the late afternoon, crews had opened up the far outbound lane for alternating one-way traffic.
Those headed to Granville Island on Saturday were still advised to access the island through alternative means, such as walking, cycling or taking a ferry.
According to reports, crews hope to have the break repaired by the end of the day and the road should be repaired and back in service for Sunday traffic.
