UPDATE: It’s official.
Word on the street is that West 4th will have one less location to grab a coffee and your favourite pastry in 2023.
Kitsilano.ca has learned that Terra Breads will shutter its location at 2380 West 4th Avenue on December 31, 2022.
When Terra Breads first opened in Kits in 1993, it was one of the only bakeries making bread primarily with a sourdough starter. It was also one of the few bakeries with an open kitchen concept that allowed customers to see behind the scenes.
And, it was one of the first bakeries to include a café attached to its retail space — something we take for granted today.
Sourdough facts:
- Terra Bread’s sourdough starter links the loaves they make today with the ones we made decades ago. The essence of their breads — their very flavour — is carried through that link.
- Loaves are scored by hand with their signature mark. In fact, they can tell which baker scored each loaf as it’s a little like signing their work.
If you’re a local Terra Breads fan, be sure to swing by before the end of the year to let them know they’ll be missed.

What a terrible loss for Kits! :'(
Agree it’s a loss especially since Terra was faithful to locals all through the darkest periods of the pandemic.
However I’ve seen their business fail to resurrect itself since then- the Kits store is often empty and the constant lineup at the Granville Island store is gone probably forever.
Whether it’s changing tastes or stratospheric price increases people are staying way in droves.
