The Vancouver Park Board has officially approved alcohol consumption at Kitsilano Beach for the summer season, making those sunset picnics and oceanfront gatherings even better.

After two successful trial summers, the board has given the green light for responsible drinking at Kitsilano Beach, along with six other city beaches. The new policy will be in effect from the first week of June to the last week of September.

Kits Beach is one of the most beloved public spaces in Vancouver, attracting thousands of visitors every year. According to the park board’s report, data collected from previous pilot programs showed strong public support and minimal safety concerns.

“The 2024 Alcohol on Beaches re-pilot indicates that there is acceptance of the ability to drink on beaches, interest in this activity, and a low number of concerning incidents,” the report stated. With that in mind, the board unanimously approved making the program permanent—provided that annual funding remains available.

To support the initiative, the city has allocated $480,000 for program costs, including marketing, and $450,000 to cover Vancouver Police Department expenses.
