The historic Hollywood Theatre and the adjacent Hollywood Residences have been sold to Vancouver-based real estate firm Dayhu Group for $47.5 million, according to Storeys.

Located at 3123 West Broadway, the iconic Art Deco-style theatre was originally built in 1935. For 76 years, it operated as a family-run cinema, offering affordable double-feature screenings before closing in 2011 due to financial challenges and changing market conditions. The theatre faced potential redevelopment threats, including a proposed conversion into a fitness center, before community advocacy efforts helped preserve it as a cultural space.

Extensive renovations in 2020 restored key architectural features while modernizing the venue for various events, including film screenings, live performances, and community gatherings. The theatre’s defining design elements, such as its hieroglyphic roofline decorations, black-and-gold tiled ticket booth, and vibrant neon signage, remain intact.

Alongside the theatre, the Hollywood Residences, a six-story rental building completed in 2022, was included in the sale. The development features 40 rental units and complements the revitalized entertainment space.

The buyer, Dayhu Group, was founded in 1956 by Ben Dayson and has a diverse portfolio spanning mixed-use and industrial properties across Vancouver, Richmond, and Delta.

The Hollywood Theatre remains a treasured landmark in Kitsilano, with its legacy as a community hub continuing under new ownership.
