One of Vancouver’s most buzzed-about cafés is heading west. Cowdog, the values-driven coffee bar that first captured attention with its twice-weekly pop-up and Instagram-famous matcha, is opening a new location in Kitsilano.
Known for its minimalist aesthetic, standout drinks, and commitment to doing things differently, Cowdog has built a devoted following since transitioning from pop-up to permanent shop in 2024. Its new outpost, set to open at West 4th and Cypress, promises to bring the same thoughtful energy to one of the city’s most café-saturated neighbourhoods.
But Cowdog’s appeal runs deeper than pretty lattes and curated vibes. Co-founders Joe Lee and Ryan Leenstra operate the business under a no-tip, living wage model—eschewing industry norms by paying staff fairly, including vacation and sick days, and never charging extra for non-dairy milk. They’ve also been unusually transparent about their financials, offering followers a rare peek behind the curtain of café economics in a high-cost city.
Social media has played a big role in Cowdog’s rise. From braided cardamom buns to vivid green cups of matcha, the café’s photogenic offerings routinely rack up likes. Their latest announcement, a simple Instagram tease, was enough to send fans speculating—and celebrating—the arrival of a second location.
The Kitsilano expansion feels like a natural next step for a brand that’s balanced hype with heart. If Cowdog’s track record is any indication, you can expect thoughtfully developed food, quality drinks, and a welcoming team—plus the inevitable line out the door.
