Kitsilano’s iconic outdoor pool is expected to open in June this year, marking a later-than-usual start to the summer season at one of Vancouver’s most popular waterfront destinations.
According to the City of Vancouver, Kitsilano Pool is currently targeting a June opening as crews continue necessary maintenance and repairs to prepare the facility for public use. The delay means the pool will miss its typical Victoria Day weekend launch, which is when most of the city’s outdoor pools begin welcoming swimmers.
Located along the shoreline at Kitsilano Beach, the pool is a major draw each summer. At 137 metres long, it’s the longest outdoor swimming pool in North America and the only saltwater pool in Vancouver, filled from nearby English Bay.
The delayed opening comes as the aging facility continues to face infrastructure challenges. The pool has required repeated repairs in recent years, including issues that pushed back openings in previous summers.
City officials say the additional work this spring is necessary to ensure the pool can operate safely throughout the season. Kits Pool has been identified as being near the end of its service life, with long-term planning already underway for a future replacement.
Despite the setbacks, anticipation remains high for the pool’s return. Situated steps from the beach, cafés, and the Seawall, Kits Pool is a cornerstone of summer in Kitsilano, drawing families, swimmers, and visitors from across the city.
The pool typically operates through to early or mid-September, depending on weather and staffing, giving residents a full season once it opens.
For now, locals will need to wait a little longer—but if all goes to plan, Kits Pool should be ready to make a splash again sometime in June.
