The October presentation for the Vancouver Historical Society’s 2008-2009 speaker series is “Early History of Punk Rock in Vancouver” with Scott Beadle, Vancouver’s Punk Rock Historian. The presentation is tonight at 7:30pm at the Vancouver Museum at 1100 Chestnut Street (Vanier Park). Admission is FREE.

About the speaker: Scott Beadle was a teenaged “fanzine” publisher in 1979. Inspired by Vancouver’s first fanzine “Snot Rag”, Scott sold copies of “Skitzoid” at local punk concerts. This is how he met other scene members, and he even got to interview visiting bands such as Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys.

More recently, while earning an Undergraduate Degree in History from SFU, Scott was inspired to revisit his experiences, and to reassess punk in relation to the subcultures and counter-cultures that predated it. Since 2001 he has been chronicling the early history Vancouver punk, including interviewing participants from that period, with plans to eventually publish.

The Vancouver Historical Society was established in 1936 to stimulate public interest in Vancouver’s history, to encourage historical research and publication, and to promote the designation and preservation of historic sites. It is incorporated provincially as a non-profit society, registered federally as a charity, and is a member of the British Columbia Historical Federation.

On the fourth Thursday of the month (except in June, July, August and December), the society sponsors presentations by guest speakers on subjects generally relating to the history of Vancouver. These gatherings take place in the Vancouver Museum, located at 1100 Chestnut Street at 7.30 pm. All meetings are FREE and open to the public and visitors are welcome.
