Piato still getting mixed reviews

1727

Metro’s Anya Levykh slaughtered new Greek eatery Piato today and I completely disagree with her.

I’ve never gone from love to hate quite so fast. The concept—contemporary Greek cuisine—was exciting, the online menu read well, and the room looked clean and modern. We went eagerly, arrived hungry and left disgusted.

Anybody else out there that had a great experience at Piato that can back me up?

I’m with you on this one Rob. I wonder if perhaps Anya went in with the wrong expectations. Her opening paragraphs read like she was yearning for her former mother-in-law’s home cooked goodness. Well, if you’re looking for that kind of Greek food, there are plenty of great places in Kits.

My wife and I went to Piato for lunch a couple of weeks ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We shared the funky gyros, the amazingly well cooked fried calamari, and the best fried zucchini and eggplant chips either of us have ever had. We’ve been trying to go back ever since, but just haven’t been able to work it out babysit wise.

I have to disagree with the both of you.

    Anya is absolutely bang on.

Good or bad… you’ve nevertheless peaked my interest. I’ll have to go and check it out. Will report back soon.

I agree with Anya – it was awful. The souvlaki was a disaster and the service was poor. So many better Greek restaurants in town.

Again, both Natasha and Anya are right…do not waste your time at Piato. I can still taste the cold potatoes and over-done garlic.

Piatos is a train wreck in slow motion.

I’d have to agree with Anya, I’ve eaten at high end greek restaurants in New York City (look up Pylos restaurant) and Piato was definitely a BIG dissapointment. Coming up with innovative ideas is one thing, but executing them well so that people perceive a value in paying a lot of money for these ideas is completely different. The idea: Fantastic! wish I had the guts! The execution: VERY poor.

By the way. I’ve met their “chef” a couple years ago, while he was working at another un-named greek restaurant in Vancouver. I, an owner of another un-named greek restaurant in vancouver am always curious to find out how other kitchens run. He was an adament supporter of the microwave then… I doubt things have changed much.

Alexandra Gill gave Piato a thumbs up in today’s Globe. Why? I have absolutely no idea…maybe it was the nice lighting because it couldn’t have been the food and service.

Have you been back Darren? In your post you mention you were there in the opening night, with a few kinks to be worked out.

Piato is either subject to a large degree of personal taste (good) or thy swing back and forth between great nights and disastrous nights (bad).
