24 Hours Vancouver is reporting that a mother-and-son crimefighting duo stopped an arson attempt in the 1800 block of West 2nd either today or yesterday (it’s not clear from the reporting below).
A mother-and-son team stopped an apparent arson yesterday in the 1800 block of West 2nd Avenue early Monday morning.
A woman, 64, and her son 34, were strolling in the neighbourhood around 5 a.m. when they saw a garage burning in a laneway. The quick-thinking duo grabbed a blue box and started scooping water from puddles to douse the flames.
The son saw a man emerge holding a yellow gerry can and an axe. The son called 911 and police arrested the man – also carrying a large knife – near Burrard and West 2nd Avenue.
“This guy was armed and obviously unpredictable,” said Const. Jana McGuinness. By the time fire crews arrived, the fire to the garage was largely out. A second fire at the front of the house was self-extinguished.
It took many attempts for emergency crews to contact a 95-year-old woman and her son inside the house.
A Vancouver man, 44, faces two counts of arson, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon and a single count of carrying a dangerous weapon.
Can anybody confirm when this happened?

This Vancouver Sun article has a little more detail, and claims it was around 5am Sunday morning:

This is quite disturbing to me as I live nearby.
The Good News is that there’s no evidence of fire in both the north & south lanes of the 1800 W 2nd, whatever blaze that was set was small and extinguished quickly.
