Today the Vancouver Sun reported that the Ridge repertory cinema in Kitsilano is set to end operation on Christmas Eve. The good news is that negotiations continue that may see it reopen the next day as a first-run theatre under new management. And word on the street is that it may be Leonard Schein of the Fifth Avenue and Park cinemas.
Onerous hikes in municipal property taxes (16 per cent this year alone) are to blame, but that isn’t scaring off Schein. Let’s hope he isn’t just being a little sentimental with this acquisition and simply prolonging the demise of the 55 year-old Westside institution – Schein broke into the movie biz back in 1978 with the Ridge.
