In Part I of my Vancouver Folk Festival close-up I shared details on some of the lesser known artists taking the stage for the 35th annual music festival. Now I turn my spotlight to the headliners.
Friday, July 13th: Dan Mangan
Most of us fell in love with this Vancouver born and based soulful artist with the album Nice Nice Very Nice and a particular single off that album, Robots. Now Mr. Mangan is selling out the Orpheum and music venues across North America and Europe touring his newest album, a beautiful compilation titled Oh Fortune. Mangan is a multiple award winner including Juno’s 2012 New Artist of the Year. Get to the festival grounds early to plot out your spot at the main stage; this is bound to be one of the highlights of the 3-day festival.
Saturday, July 14th: K’Naan
Part activist, humanitarian, poet, singer, songwriter, and musician this Canadian artist has surged in popularity in the last few years. You’ll probably recognize K’Naan’s hit Wavin’ Flag as a remixed version of the track was used by FIFA to be the soundtrack for the 2010 World Cup tournament. His style has been described as a mix of Bob Marley and Eminem. His new single featuring fellow Canadian Nelly Furtado “Anybody Out There” is on regular repeat on top music lists and radio stations.
Sunday, July 15th: Hey Rosetta!
The Vancouver Folk Festival is just one of a number of festival stops Hey Rosetta! are making this summer music season. Bonaroo, Lollapalooza, Sasquatch, and River’s Edge just to name a few. It appears all of North America have discovered this Canadian rock band. Don’t be surprised to see over 10 band members including an impressive strings section on stage at the same time! Can’t think of a better group to close out the festival.
