UPDATE: The Vancouver Sun reports that the two-year-old German Shepherd left for dead in a dumpster Wednesday died of a heart attack this evening around 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 19th. B.C. SPCA staff gave the dog CPR for more than 30 minutes, but couldn’t revive the canine.
The BC SPCA is investigating after a badly injured German shepherd was left to die in a dumpster near Kit Beach. The two-year-old dog had serious cuts to his face and neck and was wrapped in a bloody blanket when a couple discovered him in the 1400-block of Maple Street shortly before noon today.
Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the SPCA, told CTV News the animal was also found bruised and underweight, and a probe has been launched to find out what happened.
“We have identified the owner and are working, with the assistance of the Vancouver police, to determine how the dog sustained the injuries and who is responsible,” Moriarty said in a statement. The dog’s injuries appear to have occurred within the past 24 hours, Moriarty added.
SPCA constables pulled the dog out of the dumpster and rushed him to a critical care animal hospital for treatment, but it’s unclear whether the animal can be saved.
