Scout Magazine reports that Gastropod (1938 West 4th @ Cypress) is to close at the end of April:
The award-winning Gastropod restaurant on West 4th will close at the end of April and reopen two weeks later as Maenam, an authentic Thai restaurant that will have the same attention to detail in the service and a similarly amped wine and cocktail program. Gastropod will continue as a private catering company.
Andrew Morrison likens Maenam’s concept – fine food, accessible price points, and liquids emphasis – to a Thai Vij’s. And while I love Gastropod, the idea of a Thai version of Viji’s is pretty darn exciting.
Be sure to check out the video interview that Andrew did with chef Angus An, where the latter provides some background and details about the switch.
One question though, are oysters with grape jelly and horseradish snow a Thai dish? I sure hope so…

I wish them all the best but given the rent they must be paying I don’t see it going anywhere unless they have some very deep pockets backing them.
Remember Vij had a classic climb to success he started in that shoebox down on Broadway and only after it had been jam packed night after night after night did he move to a more expensive location and even then it was marginal to South Granville.
As much as I love Thai food most Vancouverites are lukewarm about it what they want isn’t a searing multi-level symphony of flavours but pap and more pap.
