veuveChampagne, spumante, cava, sekt… There are many ways to toast the New Year this evening and tomorrow morning, during New Year’s Day brunch. (Note: Brunchers, check out Janelle’s Terra Bread Panettone French Toast recipe!)

Doing the rounds today to pick up last minute items for our New Year’s Eve,  I spotted some great deals on bubbly at Kits Wine Cellar (2235 West 4th Ave.). If you’re still in need of an extra bottle or two for your own celebrations, or as a hostess gift, here’s a sample of what’s on sale.

If you find yourself running short during your evening event, Kitsilano Wine Cellar is open until 11pm today.

Veuve Cliquot Brut with ice jacket: Was $76. Is now: $60.
This classical dry Champagne is a blend of two-thirds black grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) for body, balanced with one-third Chardonnay for elegance. It has a fine persistent sparkle and golden Champagne color. Each individual bottle comes contained in an Ice Jacket, guaranteed to keep your Veuve cold for up to 2 hours.

Lanson Tsarine Champagne Rose: Was $60. Is now: $40.
34% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, 33% Pinot Meunier (90 points from Wine Enthusiast) Chanoine Freres is the second oldest champagne house. The Chanoine family is one of the oldest in Epernay. In 1730, during the reign of Louis XV, the brothers Jacques-Louis and Jean-Baptiste Chanoine established a company trading in the wines of champagne under the name of Chanoine Freres. Chanoine Freres have created the Cuvee Tsarine in honour of Tsarist Russia, the foremost export market for the wines of champagne during the XIXth century. The bottle design evokes the swirling spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow and the opulence of pre-revolutionary Imperial Russia. Crisp, dry but fruity, this has just enough body to support the red currant flavors and crisp red-apple skin texture. A lively, vibrant wine, all freshness and light, just what a rosé should be.

Sumac Ridge Stellar’s Jay Brut: Was $25. Is now $20.
The 2007 vintage of Steller’s Jay Brut stands up extraordinarily to its reputation for being
one of Canada’s premier sparkling wines. The alluring hues of coral and amber embody
crisp orchard fruit and citrus blossom aromas. Compliments of toasty nut linger with a
soft and creamy floral mousse finish.

Raventos Rosell Brut: Was $25. Is now $19.
Macabeu, Xarel.lo, Chardonnay. Wonderfully crisp and clean. Fine, delicate bubbles with a touch of
honey melon. Aromas of toast, citrus and apple introduce dry flavors of golden pear, yellow apple and grapefruit. Well-balanced acidity and small, energetic bubbles make this a pleasing sip.

Happy New Year, everybody!
