Greek Day in Kitsilano in the 1980s
During summer in Vancouver, it seems like there’s a new street festival every weekend. Often, there is. Greek Day 2013— a free Greek-themed cultural festival– is coming up in Kitsilano on Sunday, June 23. Greek Day is your chance to dance in circles, bellow “opa!” and consume too many spanakopita.
As you probably know from shopping on West Broadway, Kitsilano neighbourhood is home to Vancouver’s Greek immigrant population. The massive street party celebrating Greek culture, which drew a crowd of 100,000 people last year, will close four blocks of West Broadway from MacDonald to Blenheim from 11am to 9pm.
Greek Day, much like Commercial Drive’s Italian Day, is a free event that’s perfect for families (there’s even a baby change station) looking for fun things to do on the weekend. The entertainment line-up includes live Greek folk music, invigorating dancing lessons, a Greek talent show, a Greek food tasting tent, cooking demos, Greek food carts, an artisan market and a pretty rocking kids zone with Greek crafts, face painting and a bouncy castle.
