Picnic

This year, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 11. As many of us can attest to, it’s a tough job being a mama and we deserve some breaks, and not just once a year! Try these 3 Mother’s Day ideas for lunch or dinner any old time – she will surely appreciate it.

3 Mother’s Day Ideas for Lunch or Dinner

1. Family Friendly
Only us locals seem to know about this casual hotspot right on the beach, though we tend to forget about it, seeing as it rarely has any lineups (though it should). The Galley Patio & Grill on Jericho Beach at the Jericho Sailing Centre has an amazing water view, lots of high chairs, and a simple yet excellent menu. Choose from such family favourites as Ocean Wise chowder, wild salmon salad, or free-range beef and chicken burgers. The best pick: the Alaskan Grey Cod Fish & Chips made with a light beer batter and highly addictive fresh-cut fries. There’s a kids menu too, plus the Galley is licensed. For dessert, there’s an ice cream counter serving up generous scoops of the sweet stuff. Tip: bring some sand toys for the kids so they can play down below while Mom enjoys a cool pint on the patio. The Galley is open daily, all day.

2. Date Night Out
Right, so Mom needs an actual break which means arrange for a babysitter and go out for a meal, just the two of you. Head over to romance-encouraging Baru Latino. This snug spot on Alma has a Latin American tapas menu which is ideal for sharing. The best picks: Latin chips, costillas de res (beef short ribs), beef tiradito (Carpaccio), Ecuadorian red ceviche (with scallops, shrimp, and octopus), and the paella baru which is overflowing with fresh local seafood. Add some caipirinhas, a bit of smooth jazz, and finish with the morocho – a warm, soft chocolate cake. Tip: Baru usually has a lineup on the weekends so be sure to make reservations in advance. Baru is open daily, from 5pm-late.

3. Picnic in the Park
Whether you bring the whole family or venture out without the rugrats, a basket filled with goodies enjoyed on a patch of grass in the sunshine should give Mom a chance to relax. Go to her favourite park, beach, or even the backyard, lay down a waterproof blanket, and show off the spread that you’ve put together. Include things like sandwiches, crackers, soft cheeses, olives, candied pecans, strawberries & whipped cream, chocolates, pastries, and some bubbly! Get the sandwiches and pastries from our very own Terra Breads on 4th Avenue. The best picks: The roasted wild salmon sandwich, the roast chicken + bacon sandwich, and the rustic tarts. Pick up the rest of the ingredients at Whole Foods and the Kitsilano Wine Cellar, both on 4th as well. Tip: bring some pillows for comfort and umbrellas for rain or shine weather. Terra Breads in Kitsilano is open daily seven days a week.
