Get ready for another rockin’ summer. Vancouver’s biggest free music and arts street festival, Khatsahlano, has just released their 2014 event line-up. In case you’re new to our fair neighbourhood, Khatsahlano festival takes place in Kitsilano on West 4th Avenue between Burrard and MacDonald every summer. Last year, over 118,000 folks showed up in Kits. We expect 2014 to be bigger and better still. Did we mention that it’s free? Yes. But it’s worth repeating.
This year, Khatsahlano festival takes place July 12, 2014 from 11am to 9pm. We’re talking about 10 blocks, 8 stages, 50 bands, 40 food trucks, a heap of artists, a few beer gardens, and more Kitsilano merchants than we can count.
Note that in 2014, the West 4th BIA has changed the festival name from Khatsahlano! to Khatsahlano Block Party. But that’s just a case of to-may-to, to-mah-to, in our humble opinion.
Details on participating bands below!
The Khatsahlano 2014 festival will feature 50 bands, 40 food trucks, and hundreds of merchants and vendors scattered along Kitsilano’s buzzy main drag.
The big event at the 2014 festival is a tribute to Vancouver psych-pop superstars Poppy Family, with original members Susan Jacks, Craig McCaw and Satwant Singh and members of The New Pornographers, Black Mountain and Destroyer getting on stage. Coming out of the alternative, underground culture that was flourishing along 4th Avenue in the sixties and seventies, The Poppy Family released a slew of international hits that had a huge influence on Vancouver songwriters and continue to do so to this day.
Other highlights include multiplatinum pop-rockers the Grapes of Wrath; electronic-pop duo Humans; Vancouver’s first punk band the Furies; Jagjaguwar-signed synth-pop duo Lightning Dust; prog-rock outfit Bend Sinister; experimental-folk act Aidan Knight; Nardwuar’s band the Evaporators; accordion player and provocateur Geoff Berner; and 2013 Peak Performance Project winner Rykka.
The rest of the music line-up includes: Cool, Flyin’, the Graham Brown Band, the Greater Wall, Hard Rock Miners, Holy Hum, Inherent Vices, Jay Arner, Jody Glenham, Mac Pontiac, Mesa Luna, Mu, Nicholas Krgovich, Nü Sensae, Phil Western, Piggy, Project Pablo, Rook Milo, Shawn Mrazek Lives!, Sly Business, Star City, Sunday Morning, Synthcake, Tough Age, the Wayward Hearts, White Poppy, the Wild North, Willie Thrasher, Woolworm, Young Braised, Young Liars and more to be announced. In addition, one stage is dedicated to the first appearance of this year’s Peak Performance Project Top 12 bands (announced on June 11).
