What To Do This Weekend in Kits

1. Vancouver Folk Music Festival: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Vancouver Folk Music Festival returns to Jericho Beach Park July 18-20 and tickets are still on sale. We love Folk Fest not only because it’s been a part of Kits culture since 1978, but also because the organizers do a great job of honouring the past while keeping up with what’s hot now. This year, for example, folk legend Joan Baez is coming along with the offbeat superstar Andrew Bird, who gives remarkable live performances. Follow the links to find out more about 2014 Folk Fest artists and tickets.

2. Kitsilano Showboat: Friday & Saturday
The grand old dame of Kits summer is reveling in her 79th season of performances at Kits Beach. Offering free, live entertainment every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 7pm until August 16, the Showboat is a beloved staple of Kitsilano summers.

3. Try Kitsilano Beach Beach Nuts: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
It’s high summer. If you haven’t already sucked down fresh coconut water with an ocean view – quintessential summer experience –  it’s  time to rectify that. Vancouver Beach nuts coconut stand is at Kits Beach now through the end of summer. Head on over to their stand and cool down with a fresh coconut!

4. Exhibit “Babes & Bathers – History of the Swimsuit” at Vancouver Maritime Museum: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
An exhibit on swimsuits?! What could be more pertinent in July in a beach  neighbourhood? As a city surrounded by water, going to the beach and owning a swimsuit is an essential part of both our wardrobe and our Vancouver identity. Drawing primarily on the collections of fashion historian Ivan Sayers, the Maritime Museum will display examples of swimwear worn in Vancouver from the 1890s to the 1980s. From swimming costumes to bikinis, bathing suits styles have fluctuated from the modest to the more revealing, all in a desire to make us fashionable by the water’s edge.

5. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” William Shakespeare. Ah, how true the words of Shakespeare. Enjoy more of this 16th century playwright, poet, and actor’s work at Kitsilano’s Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival set in Vanier Park.  The season runs from June 11 to September 20 this year and plays include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Equivocation, and Cymbeline. Times vary from afternoons to evenings for most days. Tickets start at about $35/person per play.

6. Chef at Fifth Avenue Cinema: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
This terrific flick about a talented chef who hits rock bottom and recovers his pride and his family by starting a food truck is an all around feel good, whether you go to steal the recipe for perfect grilled cheese from the Kogi BBQ Food Truck founder, or you’re just ready to enjoy a heartwarming family comedy.

7. Kitsilano Farmers Market: Sunday
Meet your makers and get your mitts on some pretty produce. The Kitsilano Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 10am-2pm until October 19. Located in the parking lot of the Kitsilano Community Centre at 2690 Larch Street, the Farmers Market provides a wonderful opportunity to buy and eat locally grown, raised, crafted, baked, and harvested food. Find everything from Cawston-grown organic apples to Maple Ridge beeswax candles and wild BC morel mushrooms. With over 50 vendors each week, you may not get a chance to meet every one of them so we’ve picked 4 that you won’t want to pass by.
