Every year, we cover the annual fall UBC Apple Festival. This year, we’re bringing you even more fall harvest goodness and more access to tasty apple pies.

UBC Apple Festival takes place October 18-19, 2014. But there’s another apple festival on our radar. The Salt Spring Island Apple Festival takes place September 28, 2014. It’s a little farther afield and totally worth the trip. Salt Spring has been growing apples since 1860. Today over 350 varieties of organic apples grow on the island.

Details on the festivals are below. You don’t have to choose. They’re on different weekends. Why not hit up both?

Salt Spring Island Apple Festival

When: September 28
Where: Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

You’ve probably heard about the UBC apple festival, but it’s worth going farther afield to taste the best of the B.C. organic crop at the annual Salt Spring Island Apple Festival. Salt Spring has been growing apples since 1860. Today over 350 varieties of organic apples grow on the island. You can see the organic apple varieties on display at Fulford Hall, as well as visit 18 island farms welcoming visitors for tours, tastings and apple sales. The best bit is the pie showdown with 12 different types of apple pies on sale by bake-stars known as the Pie Ladies. Tickets are available only in person on the festival day.

Where: UBC Botanical Garden

This family-friendly event features learning, playing and lots of tastings, from heritage apples to cider, apple chips, candy apples and pie.  Gardeners find the UBC Apple Festival a great resource for learning about fruit trees as well as purchasing apple trees. Kids dig activities ranging from a giant leaf pile, to face painting, story telling and puppet shows.
