Remember when the Real Housewives of Vancouver premiered in 2012? Everyone smirked and said they’d never watch it and then it got the record for the highest-rated premiere in Slice network’s history. You can expect more of the same for HBICtv: Ultra Rich Asian Girls, a show about Vancouver’s super rich Asian women, which will launch in the next month or so following a viral casting call last summer.
The casting video drew 300,000 views on YouTube and 2.8 million viewers in China. Produced by local television producer Kevin Li, the web-based reality series pokes into the lives of the daughters of loaded, Mandarin-speaking Chinese-Canadians living in Vancouver.
How rich are the women exactly? We don’t know. And we don’t know why the title of the show uses “girls” when these are, in fact, Chinese-Canadian women. But that deserves its own blog post.
Worse and worse, the show gimmick is who will be top gal as they compete for the status of “HBIC” – the “Hot B*tch In Charge.”
We’ll see how long it stays on the air. Real Housewives of Vancouver was canceled last year after two seasons while the much-hyped Real Hipsters of Vancouver never made it to air.
