We love a new holiday, as long as it’s a fun one. On that note, we’re happy to celebrate Macaron Day, March 20. Macaron Day was started in 2005 in Paris by legendary pastry chef Pierre Hermé, and it’s celebrated worldwide by people who value a compelling excuse to eat more cookies. Part of the cookie proceeds go to a charity chosen by the baker.

Here are three places in Kits and nearby on Granville Island where you find classic and inventive macarons flavours. Go indulge for a good cause.

Thomas Haas
Mr. Hoss, oops we meant Haas, has skills, and his macarons are as flawless as his chocolates.  Our favourites here are mango-coconut and coffee. Once again Haas will donate 100% of macaron profits from both locations (Kitsilano and North Vancouver) on Friday to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

Stuart’s Bakery
Stuart’s Bakery in the Granville Island Public Market makes decent macarons as well. There’s less flavour choice, but when has focus ever been a bad thing?

L’Epicerie Gourmand
This year, L’Epicerie Gourmande in the Granville Island Market is joining the celebration. Their chef David is the real deal: he hails from Provence. L’Epicerie has a many flavours including lavender, strawberry, coconut, and chocolate, L’Epicerie Gourmande will donate 30 percent of regular macaron sales to B.C. Children’s Hospital.
