If your perfect Halloween involves costumes, drinks, and treats, then we’ve got you covered. We’ve compiled a list of all the best Halloween events and non-events for grown-ups, taking place around Kitsilano next weekend. Use it to get dressed up and celebrate without venturing out of the neighbourhood.
Here’s where to be in Kits on Halloween:
One of our favourite spots for all occasions (and non-occasions), Darby’s has a great night planned for next Saturday. From 9pm to 2am you can indulge in some scary karaoke (Scaryoke!). There are also tons of prizes up for grabs for best costume, best group costume, and best couple’s costume. We were at Darby’s for Halloween last year and it was a blast, with Halloween Bash 2015 promising to be bigger and better, so this is definitely one of our top recommendations for a fun night.
Colony is holding an Old School Sports Halloween. The event, from 8pm to 2am on the 31st, is hosted by the Raven Rugby Club and promises a DJ and dancing, drink specials ($4 highballs and $5 rotating local beer taps), and what is sure to be a house packed full of burly, brazen rugby players. You don’t want to miss it.
If the bar scene isn’t for you on Halloween, then mosey over to Rain or Shine and treat yourself to one of their fall flavours. Right now, they’ve got Carrot Cake (with pecans) and Brassneck Stout with Bar Snack Brittle on the menu. You can settle into the shop with a cone and watch the costumes walk past the window, or you can grab a pint to go and enjoy it at home while greeting trick-or-treaters.
4) Bimini’s pumpkin ale + pumpkin bubble bath + ignoring trick-or-treaters
If you don’t want the bar but you do want a festive drink, make a run up to Bimini’s liquor store (adjacent to but not part of The Bimini bar next door), and stock up on their pumpkin ale. It’s delicious and will be sure to numb the sound of your doorbell incessantly ringing. Enjoy it while in a Sparkly Pumpkin bubble bath from LUSH for an extra-indulgent, extra-pumpkiny evening.
5) DIY pub/club crawl
Don your costumes and make your way throughout the neighbourhood to hit up all the bars and pubs that are sure to be serving drink specials and playing some festive tunes all night long. We suggest starting at Corduroy on Cornwall, a longtime favourite, and walking along the water for some added spookiness. Head up the Yew St. hill to stop in on Local and the King’s Head. You can head west down 4th Avenue to find Displace, or keep going up to Broadway where you can turn left to make Academic your final destination or make a right to head in the direction of Coppertank. If you walk, you can eat all the treats you want, right?
