On November 11, British Columbians will gather in remembrance of all who have fallen in military service for their country. After these ceremonies take place, Kitsilano’s Billy Bishop Legion is hosting its annual Remembrance Day celebration. This special celebration is a chance for the Kitsilano community to come together to commemorate November 11.
Affectionately known as the Billy by locals and regulars, this Legion is arguably the best in the Lower Mainland. It has the warmth of an old English pub and the fireplace and cozy red banquette booths will make you want to park yourself in the Billy all day. And all day you shall, as Remembrance Day celebrations at the Billy take place from 12-noon until 12-midnight.
With the tables and chairs moved aside, satellite bar stations set-up, live music and traditional bagpipes playing, it’s a celebration not to be missed.
While you’re there, take a step back in time and explore the photos, badges, plaques, and military memorabilia from around the world at the Kits Point Military Museum. The museum is located in the Billy and it’s the largest known collection of military plaques in Canada. A framed portrait of Billy Bishop, the Legion’s namesake and a well-known Canadian World War I fighter pilot, hangs over the fireplace in the pub.
On November 11, take a few pulls from your pint and the ever-present Pull Tabs – and raise your glass in remembrance of those who have served in times of war, military conflict and peace.
