We shared our favourite Kitsilano ice cream shops and readers had a lot to say about the new DIP Ice Cream store that just opened at 2967 West Broadway. The shop is tucked between a dollar store and a sushi joint and co-owned by friends Tanya Shklanka and Robyn Harding.

In order to stand out from the rest of the ice cream shops in Kitsilano, DIP is all about the dip. Soft serve cones are dipped into various forms of chocolate topping before being dazzled with a coating of toppings. But that’s not the whole story. Some of our readers have already complained about the prices (not that Rain or Shine is cheap!) and we found out why they’re on the high side. DIP creates homemade soft-serve ice cream using milk from Birchwood Dairy in Abbotsford, and dips cones in Rainforest Alliance Certified chocolate, before decorating the local-ethical goodness with different toppings and drizzles. That costs.

There are nine different types of chocolate dips, including matcha white chocolate, peanut butter milk chocolate, and Mexican dark chocolate. Toppings include everything from Skor bits to kettle corn, pretzels to rainbow sprinkles, honeycomb toffee to dried strawberries.

I have to admit it felt pricey, especially compared to Kul Cup, another soft serve place that is using organic products in town. I found the ice cream a bit too sweet and granular in texture. The cones are just plain sad, mass produced and styrofoamish. Applaud the effort but a bit of a miss for me.
