During Vancouver’s recent cold snap the City gave away 262 tonnes of a salt/sand mix.
Due to a shortage of road salt and other melting agents in retail outlets, the City provided residents with free sand and salt mix at 10 fire halls.
The final tally of the City’s free salt frenzy was included in their Snow Response Plan Summary for 2016-2017 which was released yesterday.
According to the report, the City was fully prepared and at no time did the city run out of sand and salt.
So far this winter the City has used more than 10,000 tonnes with more than 4,500 tonnes is in stock and the ability to acquire more if needed.
For context, during a typical winter, they use about 1,000 tonnes of salt.
