Besides some lovely hot summer weather, here’s what’s on in Kitsilano this August long weekend, from a museum outing and watching the night skies come alive to an authentic-ish Hawaiian luau.

On until the end of September, the latest exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver, Unbelievable, showcases a wide range of bizarre artefacts collected by the MOV over the years including BC’s oldest bike, a chair made of cow horns, an old printing press from the 1880s, and a stool made out of an elephant’s foot. The evocative exhibit is designed to open up discussions on the truth and its meaning – a fitting topic during these “fake news” times. Do check out the museum’s gift shop as well, featuring locally made t-shirts, prints, toys, soaps, jams, and much more. Bonus: the museum is open till 9pm on Fridays.
Watch
Saturday, August 5th
Watch the Canadian Royal Pyrotechnie team light up the sky at 10pm on this third and final night of the Celebration of Light tonight. Our neighbourhood Vanier Park is one of the best vantage points to view this incredible fireworks spectacle (Kits Beach is a good viewing spot as well). Soaring high above the sky as a pre-show performance, the airplane aerobatics Mrazek Airshow will start at 7:45pm, and if you forgot your picnic, munch on gourmet smokies from the Mr. Tube Steak food truck instead, on site from 1pm till 10pm.
Eat
Sunday, August 6th
Come to your local Billy Bishop Legion of ping pong fame for their world famous Hawaiian Luau & Pig Roast night, featuring Polynesian dancers, live music by the jazzy Lulu & Her Handsome Men band, and a roast pig dinner with all the trimmings. From 4pm till 11:30pm. Everyone is welcome and tickets cost $20 at the door.
