Tuesday, March 20th was the first official day of spring, whether it felt like it or not. Here are some ways to warmly welcome this new season in our Kitsilano neighbourhood, with some fresh new things to see, do, and eat.
Plant something
Whether you have a backyard or a window sill, now’s the time to start planting those seeds for fresh salads and herbs to enjoy later. You can find local West Coast Seeds at Whole Foods Market and Gandy’s Home Hardware, both on West 4th Avenue, and Hunters Garden Centre on West Broadway has a large seed collection (and seedlings) also.
Eat something
Try the refreshed menu at AnnaLena on West 1st Avenue with its new Restaurant Chef, Erin Searle, previously from Meat & Bread, Bacchus at the Wedgewood Hotel, and Diva at the Met.
Or try the all-new sweet and savoury spring pastry menu at Beaucoup Bakery & Café on Fir Street. Menu items will include an Exotic Rooibos Financier, a Milk Tea Croissant, an Almond Pear Tart, a Minted Edamame and Roasted Carrot Tart, and a Chickpea and Creamy Eggplant Sandwich.
Learn something
The Museum of Vancouver is hosting a guided tour of its newest exhibit, Haida Now, with guest curator Kwiaahwah Jones. The exhibit features a collection of more than 450 works of Haida art by carvers, weavers, photographers, and printmakers. The tour is on Friday, March 23rd, from 7pm till 8:30pm and costs $29. Registration is required as there are only a limited number of spots available.
Do something
Join the Kitsilano Walkers, a volunteer-organized walking group, every Tuesday at the Kitsilano Community Centre at 9:30am and see where the day leads.
Or try Latin and Ballroom Dancing, also at the Kitsilano Community Centre. Classes run Sundays until April 15th, from 7:30pm till 9pm. Drop-ins are welcome if space permits and costs $19.05
