Thanks to the folks behind KitsFest, bathtub racing is returning to Vancouver after a 22-year absence.
Canada One Foundation, organizers of an annual sports and healthy living festival at Kitsilano Beach, suggested the inclusion of bathtub racing in their line-up of activities and the Vancouver Park Board unanimously approved the idea.
Bathtub racing took place annually between Nanaimo and Kitsilano Beach from 1967 to 1996, with hundreds of tubs crossing the choppy waters of the Strait of Georgia.
Scheduled to be held at Kitsilano Beach on August 11th, the KitsFest Bathtub Circuit Race would see a bathtub racing circuit set up in English Bay, with races going on throughout the afternoon.
Event organizers are expecting 20+ bathtubs entered to race the 1 mile course across 3 divisions and multiple heats.
Attendance is expecting to top 10,000 spectators and the event will include a 1,200 person beer garden.
