Last year the B.C. government announced it will match the federal government’s commitment of $2.2 billion over the next 11 years to fund the Broadway SkyTrain extension project and the Surrey LRT plan.
The Broadway SkyTrain extension will extend the Millennium Line from its current VCC-Clark endpoint southwest to Broadway and Main, and then west to Arbutus Street in Kitsilano.
With a federal election coming in October and a provincial election likely to follow, UBC says there is a “narrow window” to convince all three levels of government to fund an extension of the Millennium Line from Arbutus Street to UBC’s Point Grey campus.
To make that happen, UBC has launched a new campaign for the Millennium Line’s remaining journey to the university.
For those that are unaware, UBC is the third largest employment centre in the province with about 80,000 staff, faculty, students, and residents at the Point Grey campus daily. And the on-campus population is forecasted to grow by an additional 25,000 people over the coming two decades.
According to UBC’s campaign, there are currently 156,000 daily trips on transit to and from UBC and 1,000+ buses per day flow through UBC’s bus exchange. UBC also estimates that there over 500,000+ potential bus riders are passed by full buses every year on the Broadway–UBC corridor.
