With highs of 30 degrees expected this weekend, now is a good time to reminder everyone that Metro Vancouver’s water restrictions are in full effect with residential limits on lawn watering.
Metro Vancouver’s Stage 1 of its Water Shortage Response Plan started on May 15th and is expected to last until October 15th.
As part of Stage 1 of the water restrictions, residents are only allowed to water the lawns — either by sprinkler or by handheld hose — on alternating days and between certain hours.
Residential addresses are allowed to water on the following days:
- Even-numbered addresses: Wednesday, Saturday mornings – 4:00am to 9:00am.
- Odd-numbered addresses: Thursday, Sunday mornings – 4:00am to 9:00am.
Non-residential addresses are allowed to water on the following days:
- Even-numbered addresses: Monday mornings from 1:00am to 6:00am.
- Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday mornings from 1:00am to 6:00am.
- All non-residential addresses: Friday mornings from 4:00am to 9:00am.
Watering trees, shrubs and flowers is permitted any day, from 4:00am – 9:00am if using a sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. All hoses must have an automatic shut-off device.
There are a few other restrictions in place for golf courses, cemetery lawn operators, and those with artificial turf. These are listed on the Metro Vancouver website.

Hard part about this is policing it all. It also doesn’t mention about other types of watering, such as if you’re growing food in your yard or if you have a balcony garden. Also, some people aren’t available to water lawns at 4 a.m. and don’t necessarily have the ability to get a timer. Wouldn’t it be cool if we had underground irrigation throughout the city that controlled all water release to our lawns? lol
