A man who allegedly threatened people in Kitsilano on Sunday was arrested after attempting to hide in a dumpster, according to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).
Police responded to reports of a suspicious individual armed with gardening shears near the Arbutus Greenway around noon. Witnesses reported the man lurking in backyards in the area.
Officers located the suspect near Arbutus Street and West 11th Avenue, but he fled into a nearby business compound. He was later found at the bottom of a dumpster, concealed under layers of garbage.
The VPD said the man refused to surrender and remained armed, prompting the use of a police dog and beanbag rounds to subdue him. The 31-year-old suspect was taken into custody and treated for injuries sustained during the arrest.
Police revealed that the man was already wanted on a province-wide warrant for assault, uttering threats, and other charges. Authorities are now recommending additional charges, including mischief, weapons possession, and breach of bail conditions.
