40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love

1700

Hippie Daze returns to West 4th Avenue on Saturday from 11am to 6pm and they’re celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love. Highlights between Fir and Balsam include an Auto Show for car buffs and a Kids Zone for the younger set. Those of you more interested in a little Kits history need to check out these other events:

Kitsilano Memories – Former CBC producer Stan Fox presents a selection of rare vintage footage shot in Vancouver during the 60s including “What Happened Last Summer,” a 1967 CBC program on the hippie scene in Kitsilano.  Also see a preview of the Kitsilano 100 commemorative plaques, showcasing the last 100 years of Kitsilano history.  In the old Afterthought Night Club (2114 West 4th Avenue) … what a trip!

Summer of Love Film Festival – The 1960s were intensely visual, colourful and controversial times, producing a great wealth of films, drama and documentary about the counterculture, and “the scene”.  Much of this material is sincere, even idealistic, but there is also much that, in retrospect, is exploitative and negative.  The collective cinematic portrait of the Summer of Love that will appear at Pacific Cinematheque until August 17th includes both the “reality” and the Hollywood version of this remarkable period.

Last Chance Circus Dance – Rock out at the old Kits Theatre on Saturday the 18th from 8pm until late, with 3 hip bands and a 60’s jam session that will bring back all those great musical memories!
