Fourth homeless shelter opens in Kitsilano

The City of Vancouver has opened an emergency shelter in Kitsilano to accommodate the city’s homeless during the winter months.

Located in the same location as last year’s temporary shelter at 1642 West 4th, the shelter provides a warm place to sleep and two meals a day for up to 40 homeless people. It will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the end of April and will operate on a reservation system to reduce lineups.

Patrons are allowed to bring with them personal items such as pets and shopping carts. And once there, they will have the option of connecting with health and social services. The shelter will be run by the Motivation, Power and Achievement Society (MPA) which is a non-profit organization that operates 24 housing programs in five different areas.

An open house is been scheduled for December 15th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm to provide area residents and businesses with information about the new service.
