Unless you’ve been asleep at the wheel for the past 15 years, you’ve likely noticed Kits has really been through a lot of transformation. I settled in the area about 16 years ago and the face of Kits has changed dramatically since then. We’ve seen construction, retail turnover, entertainment growth, better dinning and traffic really got busier. Heck, where else in Canada can you buy a 680 square foot apartment for half a million dollars!
Oh, one other thing I’ve noticed… kids everywhere! This may have something to do with the fact that I have 2 young kids of my own. Flashback 15 years ago and while there were kids around, there sure has been a kid population boom over the past number of years. Where the hippies and young adults once walked and stumbled, we now see a plethora of families, single Moms, single Dads and nannies with kids. I do see a stumbler every now and then on a Friday night still. Some public schools in the area now are on a lottery system to get kids in. Daycare wait list are 50 families deep. I’ve lost count of the baby and kid stores along 4th Ave. Broadway is the same. The playground and swimming pool at Kits beach are kid zones too.
The youth and carefree folks that grew up here and migrated from areas around the lower mainland and Canada have gone and grown up. These kids are now 30 and 40 somethings, and they are breeding like rabbits!
The new face of Kits has arrived, and the cycle begins again.

Not one gangster from Kits? I don’t think so; considering that the hippies and yuppie not all lived ideal lives.
But then I’d have to ask my cousin, who was a school pspychologist for VSB.
