Greek Day this Sunday in Kitsilano

2033

Be Greek for a day: come out and help celebrate Greek Day in Kitsilano this Sunday, June 26, at the annual family-oriented street festival. Broadway will be closed to car traffic from McDonald to Blenheim to make room for a world of fabulous Greek food, kiosks and entertainment.

I’m looking forward to:

1) Learning to roll dolmades in the Boutari Wines Culinary Tent.

2) Hitting up the Mythological Story Telling arena, which I’m sure will be better than Thor.

3) Crafting an olive branch wreath crown.

As many of you know, Kitsilano was an enclave of exiled Greek immigrants in the 1960s and 1970s, during the dictatorship in Greece. Although the thriving community dispersed somewhat due to cultural assimilation and an influx of other immigrant groups, Kits is still known as Greektown and has a fantastic density of Greek restaurants.

This year marks the 21st celebration of Greek Day. So get ready to relish the sights, sounds and tastes of Greece. Crafts and learning are awesome, but for me, it’s all about souvlaki, spanakopita and especially the honeyed loukoumades. After consuming all that, I hope I can still squat, jump, kick and shout “Opa!”
